The largest church in Slovakia and the easternmost Gothic cathedral in Europe is located in the Main Square of Košice. The interior of the cathedral, which can accommodate over 5,000 people, covers an area of 1,200 m². The exterior length of the dome is 60 m, its width is 36 m, the height of the northern tower is 59 m, the main nave is 24 m high, and the side naves are 12 m high. The Gothic cathedral, which began construction at the end of the 14th century and was completed in 1508, has undergone several renovations. Visitors can admire the beautiful exterior facade as well as the richly decorated interior. The cathedral features a sanctuary with a five-part apse, two towers, a two-story sacristy on the northern side, and two chapels and a porch on the southern side (St. Michael’s Chapel received the Fénix Award for the best-restored monument).
A crypt was built along the northern wall of the Cathedral in 1906, containing four sarcophagi for the remains of Francis II Rákóczi and his companions. A key feature of the interior is the altar of St. Elizabeth, which houses the largest collection of Gothic panel paintings in Europe. One of the towers, the Cathedral Tower, has an observation platform offering a magnificent panoramic view of the entire city of Košice. The tower is 60 meters tall and has around 165 steps – you can check the exact number during your visit :). The tower is open year-round during the tourist season from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. If you would like to make a reservation outside of the tourist season, please contact the hotel reception. We will be happy to assist you.
